Indiana Dunes National Park #shorts 11th Most Popular National Park In The USA. Located only minutes from the Chicago metro area in Northwestern Indiana. With 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline for swimming, surfing, and paddling, beachgoers may forget they’re in Indiana. For those interested in hiking and biking, there are more than 50 miles of trails through dunes, wetlands, forests, and prairies, with a handicap accessible trail at the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk. Note that the only area with lifeguards present is West Beach. in 2019, the dunes were upgraded to become Americas 61st national park.
Over 350 species of bird can be found in the park, from reclusive herons and egrets in the Great Marsh to shorebirds nesting in the trees and sand nestled along the lake. At Indiana Dunes National Park one can explore the terrain bordering Lake Michigan, as well as the many plants and animals that call the park home.
