Gerard Butler’s $57M Action Sequel Becomes Netflix Global Hit Almost 3 Months After Its Theatrical Release

17Views

A Gerard Butler action sequel enjoys a new lease of life during its debut on Netflix. Following his breakout role as King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s historical action movie 300, Butler took on a variety of roles across different genres, starring in movies including Law Abiding Citizen, Machine Gun Preacher, Geostorm, and How to Train Your Dragon. In recent years, particularly with the box office success of the Has Fallen trilogy, Butler has carved out a niche as one of the industry’s leading action stars.

Butler has a diverse filmography of action movies, romantic comedies, thrillers, and disaster films. He has also moved behind the camera, serving as producer on several of his projects, including A Family Man, Copshop, Greenland, and Last Seen Alive, as well as other movies, such as Them That Follow. Butler’s movies have grossed more than $4.8 billion globally, making him one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. However, it is his modestly performing action sequel that is soaring on streaming right now.

Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera Is Performing Well On Netflix

The Action Sequel Is Capturing Viewer Interest

Big Nick (Gerard Butler) lost in his thoughts in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera

The new follow-up to Butler’s 2018 action crime film Den of Thieves, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, sees Christian Gudegast return as writer and director, and pairs Butler’s jaded detective “Big Nick” O’Brien with O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s jewel thief Donnie Wilson once again. This time, the sequel sees the two former enemies team up for a heist they hope will make them both rich. The movie received mixed reviews and grossed just over $57 million globally against a production budget of $40 million, but it appears to have struck a chord with viewers on streaming.

Per Netflix Tudum, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera charted at #3 in the Netflix Global Top 10 English-language movies chart for the week of March 17 through March 23. It earned 8.4 million views and 20.1 million viewing hours. The film ranks above Kraven the Hunter at #4, A Quiet Place: Day One at #5, Plankton: The Movie at #6, Despicable Me 4 at #7, Morbius at #8, Infinite Storm at #9, and Trap at #10. The Electric State topped the chart for the week.

Our Take On Den of Thieves 2’s Streaming Success

The Movie Could Enjoy A Long Run On The Netflix Chart

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has enjoyed a strong streaming debut, and with 2.4 million more views than the movie behind it, there is a good chance it can enjoy a little more time in the Netflix top 10. If the movie can continue to perform well, and maybe even top the charts in the coming weeks, this will do wonders for Den of Thieves 3‘s chances of success. While it’s too early to gauge yet, there is a good chance the escapism of the action thriller could resonate with viewers looking to switch off from life for a while.
