Survivor 47 is getting down to the wire, and with a controversial vote during the most recent episode, host Jeff Probst is sharing more about the controversial interaction he had with the most recently eliminated castaway. Survivor 47 has been a thoroughly strategic slough, with the castaways doing their best to play with a higher intensity than viewers have seen in recent seasons. Throughout the season, host Jeff has been around in his usual capacity. Hosting challenges and tribal councils, Jeff has followed the same script he has for years when it comes to sending eliminated contestants on their way.
In the most recent episode of Survivor, Jeff shared extra sentiments with eliminated castaway Kyle Ostwald. Rather than simply snuffing out Kyle’s torch after sharing his typical, “the tribe has spoken,” and then letting Kyle know it’s time for him to leave, Jeff shared a quick but heartfelt moment of gratitude. “Thanks for coming out,” Jeff added in the episode before Kyle made his way offsite. According to Entertainment Weekly, Jeff shared that he improvised in the moment, but doesn’t want future castaways to prompt him. “If I ever felt this was becoming a bit…I would stop it,” Jeff shared.

While Jeff has been the host of Survivor since its debut in 2000, his time on the show hasn’t become any less important to him over the years. Jeff’s time at tribal is virtually always the same. He grills the losing castaways on what’s going on with their tribe, how they ended up at tribal, and what they’re going to do moving forward before the vote.

Once the vote is completed, Jeff tallies the votes, reads them off, and sends the eliminated castaway on their way. With a nearly identical script for most if not all of the 47 seasons of Survivor, Jeff clearly takes his role seriously with how much he wants to protect the space surrounding it. Jeff choosing to make it clear that he doesn’t want the castaway’s departures to become a bit proves that he cares deeply about his role on the show and the way he’s perceived as a host. The Survivor host has a reputation to uphold with his castaways.

He Doesn’t Want To Veer Off Course
Although Jeff’s minor alteration to his Survivor 47 tribal council script may have been noticeable by the audience and the host himself, it’s clear that he’s happy to speak from his heart, even if that means going off-script. Though he doesn’t plan to continually push himself to veer off course, Jeff doing so makes him more human to the Survivor audience who adores watching him host the show. While Jeff may not have brought too much flavor into the interaction, it was good to see him speaking from the heart to a recently eliminated and likely crestfallen castaway.
