The more glorious latter temple that the prophet Haggai foretold has nothing to do with impressive buildings or national interests or imperial aspirations—all of these things are the petty ambitions of the Pharaohs and Caesars of the world that is passing away. This is the false glory of the kingdoms of this world that Jesus rejected when the devil offered it to him in the wilderness temptation. The more glorious temple of which the prophets spoke is nothing other than the new temple that is the body of Christ, whose glory is Christ himself and whose sanctuary is shalom.
