Target just announced its exciting plan to increase the size of new stores in those communities where the need exists, plus remodel some current ones. And if they need help to decide which communities that will include, I know me (

According to the news release, “Target’s new larger-format stores optimize additional space and new design elements and at nearly 150,000 square feet, the locations are more than 20,000 square feet larger than the chain average.”
Target is calling its plan a “re-imagined store design” that features an open-style layout, elements of the local community and new stores and remodeling of existing ones. With years of research under its belt, Target is creating this updated store design to evolve its expanded retail footprint and better serve its guests like us!
These larger stores will give us even more of what we love — Target merchandise, while also supporting same-day services we’ve become accustomed to. Target has already unveiled this new, larger style store in a new location outside Houston.
Starting in 2023, over 50% of Target remodels and new stores (approximately 30) will include parts of the new design. And then in 2024, all Target remodels and new stores will feature most of the re-imagined store design elements.

Here’s what we know about the new store layout:
More Space
Target’s new store layout will have a larger fulfillment space (five times bigger than regular stores) for supporting the brand’s growth, digital orders and same-day services.
More Merchandise
The new design will give guests access to a fuller assortment of merchandise, including “expanded food and beverage, exclusive brand partnerships and a curated mix of owned brands and national brands.”
Increased Light
Ladies, you’re familiar with those awful fluorescent lights that make you look completely different (in a zombielike way) than how you looked at home, right? Those are gone thanks to larger windows that allow for more natural light. Yay!
Local Design
Individual store aesthetics, both inside and out, will include plants and reclaimed wood with elements from the community it’s built in, from native landscaping to local products.
Sustainability
Target’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040, will guide the design of its future and remodeled stores, including natural (CO2) refrigerants and rooftop solar panels, for example.
