In a two-state high speed police chase that ended in gunfire in downtown South Bend. Indiana State Police are now investigating the chase that began in Niles about 8:30pm Wednesday. Viewer supplied cell phone footage shows officers demanding the suspect get out of the vehicle. It shows what appears to be the officer holding either a taser of service weapon on the suspect before that suspect sped off.
Michigan State Police chased the suspect’s red Kia into Indiana along State Road 933 into downtown South Bend.
That’s when police say the suspect vehicle hit a South Bend Police Department squad car while the officer was deploying stop sticks. This happened at Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Drive and Marion Street.
That’s when Indiana State Police say the suspect got out and ran toward the nearby St. Joseph River. At that point, gunshots were fired. It is unclear at this point whether the pursuing police fired at the suspect, the suspect was firing at the officers, or it was an exchange of gunfire.
