Star Wars’ upcoming Lando show finally has a new development with the news that Donald Glover is on board to write and presumably star in the series.

Summary

  • Exciting development for the upcoming Lando show: Donald Glover will return and write the script alongside his brother Stephen.
  • Lando will move forward after the strikes end, reassuring fans and generating even more excitement for the show.
  • The fact that the Glovers are an Emmy-winning writing duo adds to the anticipation of seeing Donald Glover reprise his popular role as the infamous scoundrel.

Star Wars’ upcoming Lando show finally has a new and exciting development. Reportedly featuring Donald Glover’s return to the role after his appearance in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, the spin-off show was first announced in 2020 though updates regarding the series have been rather slim. However, it’s recently been confirmed that the show is moving forward, albeit with brand-new writers.

Originally reported by Above the Line and corroborated by both Gizmodo and Variety, it’s been revealed that Lando’s original writer Justin Simien has exited the project with Glover himself now writing the script along with his brother Stephen. With a deal having been struck with Lucasfilm before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it will likely be some time before development on Lando resumes with the Glovers. Additionally, there’s yet to be any word on whether original Lando actor Billy Dee Williams will be involved in the project or not.

The new writer change for Lando certainly supports the notion that Glover will indeed be returning to the role (which was expected but never officially confirmed). Likewise, the confirmation that Lando will be moving forward following the strikes helps explain the somewhat panicked and evasive reaction from actress Emilia Clarke who was recently asked about the future of her Star Wars character Qi’ra. Having made her debut in Solo with connections to both young Han Solo and Lando himself, a future appearance from Qi’ra in the Lando show would make sense.

After a long drought of zero updates, this new report for Lando is very exciting. Not only does it confirm that development for the show will indeed be happening after the conclusion of the strikes, but it also generates even more excitement considering the fact that the Glovers are an Emmy-winning writing duo. Having become just as popular in the role as Billy Dee Williams himself, it will be very exciting to see Donald Glover both writing and returning to play the infamous scoundrel when Lando finally comes to Disney+ in the near future.
